Fire Safety over Winter

2nd of January, 2026

As winter sets in and we spend more time indoors, Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service is reminding residents to take extra care with heating and electrical appliances.

Our data shows that accidental house fires increase during the winter months, often linked to everyday items such as portable heaters, tumble dryers, electric blankets and candles. Many fires start when appliances are left running unattended, or when heaters are placed too close to furniture, bedding or clothing.

Tumble dryers are a particular risk at this time of year, with fires commonly caused by lint build-up, electrical faults or items containing oils being dried. Candles and oil burners also pose a danger, especially during darker winter evenings.

Simple steps can make a big difference:

Never leave electrical appliances running while you’re asleep or out of the house Keep portable heaters well clear of anything that could burn Clean tumble dryer filters after every use Use electric blankets safely and check them regularly Take care with candles, open fires and log burners Make sure you have working smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms
