Peoples Emergency Briefing on Friday 6th November 2-4pm

You’re warmly invited to join a selected local audience for a screening of the Peoples Emergency Briefing on Friday 6th November 2-4pm at The Grand, 18 York St, Clitheroe, BB7 2DL.
The film features footage from last November’s National Emergency Briefing(NEB) which brought together leading UK experts in climate science, food security, health, economics, national security and nature. Following the screening there will be an opportunity for you to discuss ways in which we can work together to avert and minimise the risks that climate change is bringing to people and property, nature and livelihoods in the Ribble Valley.
We’ve all experienced the heatwaves this summer, watched as wildfires have devastated parts of the landscape and many of us dread potential flash floods as heavy rain hits hard-baked ground. The elderly and very young have been particularly vulnerable and we have all seen the difficulties our farmers have faced here in the Ribble Valley. The well informed no longer doubt that climate change is happening.
We’re not powerless to act. When we acknowledge the scale of the crisis honestly, we can be better prepared to deal with it. While some councillors have a statutory responsibility for emergency planning, others will feel a moral responsibility to support their communities at a very local level. The first step towards that is having a fact-based understanding of what might lie ahead. That’s why it’s important that Parish, Borough and County councillors join us so that we can all plan for the solutions we need to adopt.
Over the past 6 months, RVCAN and its local partners have shown this powerful film in communities across the Ribble Valley. We are now responding to one of the main calls from those who have attended - do our leaders also know about the serious risks, the consequences of climate change - that the UK is facing? And what are we doing in the Ribble Valley to respond to the risks?
It’s important that elected representatives have the opportunity to view the film too. The solutions are out there when we come together to acknowledge the risks and work together to adapt to changing circumstances. Many are within our current powers, including those that arise from the opportunities identified through new, local, connections.
This gathering of local leaders can
- open up potential new collaborations aimed at developing local resilience and preparedness, putting people and businesses on the front foot, able and ready to respond to new opportunities in a changing landscape
- respond to the questions asked by local people at the community screenings
- call on Government for a fact-based televised emergency briefing to bring the wider public into the conversation about solutions
